Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan and Russia's third city by many measures, about 1.3 million people where a mosque and a 16th-century cathedral sit inside one walled Kremlin. It is a walkable, low-cost city with a strong food scene and a metro line that covers the tourist core. Two nights is the working minimum; three lets you add Sviyazhsk and the Raifa monastery.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Kremlin and Bauman Street are pedestrian. One metro line (red) links Severny Vokzal, Kremlyovskaya and Ploshchad Tukaya. Buses are cheap but signage is Russian-only. Yandex Taxi gives a fixed price in the app; taxis rarely cruise for fares.

Watch out

Safety

Kazan is generally safe for tourists by day and evening. The real issues are winter ice, unlicensed taxis and pickpockets on crowded Bauman Street; keep your passport on you and use app taxis.
  • Metro and bus signs are in Russian; have your destination written in Cyrillic.
  • Unlicensed cabs at the airport and stations quote high: order in the app or agree the price first.
  • Winter ice on pavements is a real fall risk; bring grip soles.
  • Carry your passport and migration card; police checks happen.
  • Some Kremlin sites close for reconstruction without notice: check the official site.
