Enniskillen is the county town of Fermanagh, built on an island between the two halves of Lough Erne at the western edge of Northern Ireland. It is small, walkable and mostly 19th-century, with a castle, two cathedrals and boat access to the loughs. Most visitors pass through on the way to the Marble Arch Caves or the Donegal coast; one night covers the town, two nights covers the water and the estates.

Getting around

The centre is compact and flat enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Bus 192 orbits the town centre every couple of hours via Coles Hill, Drumclay (hospital) and Breandrum. Taxis are cheap for short hops; operators include A2B, County Cabs, Diamond Travel, Speedy and Star. For Castle Coole, Florence Court, the Marble Arch Caves or Lough Navar you need a car or a taxi arranged in advance.

Watch out

Safety

Enniskillen is a low-crime town and safe to walk by day and early evening. The real risks are traffic on the through roads, deep and cold water on the loughs, and late-night drunks outside the pubs.
  • Town-centre parking is limited and short-stay: park at Erneside Shopping Centre and walk in.
  • Boat hire: never hug the shore, follow the navigation markers, and treat the open lough with respect — it is aligned with the prevailing wind and waves build fast.
  • River currents are strong and the water is cold year-round.
  • Sunday opening is restricted: many shops trade only 1–6PM and some cafés and pubs open late.
  • Border roads into County Cavan and Donegal are quiet and unlit; drive with lights and watch for livestock.
