Forres is a small Moray town on the Inverness–Aberdeen rail line, 30 minutes from Inverness by train. Its draw is a Pictish carved stone, a hilltop tower with Moray Firth views, two whisky sites and Brodie Castle 5 km west. The town itself is walkable in an afternoon; most travellers use it as a quiet, cheaper base for Elgin, Findhorn and Speyside.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Bus 10 (Stagecoach) runs every 30 min from Inverness via Nairn and continues to Elgin; bus 31 runs hourly to Findhorn, about 30 min. Forres railway station sits on the A96 bypass half a mile north of town, with step-free access to both platforms. Brodie Castle is 5 km west: bus 10 or a car.

Watch out

Safety

Forres is a quiet, low-crime town and safe to walk by day and early evening. The real risks are rural: unlit roads with no pavement after dark, fast A96 traffic, changeable weather on Cluny Hill and the Dava Way, and midges near Findhorn in summer.
  • The station is outside the town centre: allow 10–15 min to walk in with bags.
  • Dallas Dhu distillery museum has been closed until further notice: check before travelling.
  • Benromach tour and shop availability changes: book or check ahead.
  • Brodie Castle opening is seasonal and limited to certain days: check the NTS site.
  • Mobile signal is patchy towards Findhorn and along the A96; download maps offline.
  • Some distilleries near Forres take no visitors at all: Glenburgie has no tours.
