Fredericksburg is a small colonial port town on the Rappahannock River, about 80 km south of Washington, DC, and the gateway to four Civil War battlefields. The walkable downtown holds the museums, shops and restaurants; the battlefields sit just outside the grid and need a car. Most visitors come for one night as a stop between DC and Richmond, or as a day trip from Northern Virginia.

Getting around
Downtown is a walking district: brick sidewalks, wide blocks, and most sights within 20 minutes on foot. The local bus, the Fred, is free and covers downtown and the shopping corridors. For the battlefields, Ferry Farm and Belmont you need a car or a rideshare; there is no useful bus to the park sites.
