Aireys Inlet

Give Aireys Inlet one night, two at most: the lighthouse tour, a beach walk and a pub meal fill a day; it is a Great Ocean Road stop, not a base.

Aireys Inlet is a small Great Ocean Road town of about 700 people between Anglesea and Lorne, known for the Split Point Lighthouse and the cliffs at Eagle Rock. Most travellers see it in half a day on the drive; one night lets you walk the beach and eat without rushing. There is no train, so you arrive by car or the V/Line coach that runs along the coast.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need a car for almost everything; the town is spread along the Great Ocean Road with no local bus. The V/Line coach between Geelong and Apollo Bay (part of the Warrnambool service) stops in the centre and near Bambra Road, roughly four times a day on weekdays and twice a day at weekends (check). Walking works for the lighthouse, the beach and the pub if you sleep in the centre.

Bigger town with the pier, cafés and the Erskine Falls turn-off; easy half-day.

River mouth, golf club kangaroos and a surf beach; good on the way in or out.

Surf shops and Bells Beach; pairs with a Geelong run.

Door to door: 1–1.25 h

Good lunch stop and the gateway to the Otways and Cape Otway.

Port Campbell and the Twelve Apostles

Drive west via Apollo Bay and Princetown, about 2 h

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep in Port Campbell or Apollo Bay.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre, Great Ocean Road

Walk to the cafés, the general store and the beach track; the motel and most rentals sit here.

Near the lighthouse and Bambra Road

Quieter, a short drive or 15–20 min walk from the shops; the western coach stop is here.

Fairhaven and Eastern View

Neighbouring hamlets 5–10 min west; more holiday houses, surf beach at Fairhaven.

Watch out

Safety

A very safe small town; the real risks are surf and rips on unpatrolled beaches, unfenced cliff edges, and wildlife on the road at dusk.
  • No train and no local bus: without a car, plan around the coach timetable.
  • Swimming is unpatrolled at Aireys Inlet and Fairhaven outside summer; surf and rips are real.
  • Cliff edges at Eagle Rock and the lighthouse are unfenced in places: stay back from the lip.
  • Many cafés and the pub run shorter hours or close midweek in winter (check).
  • Mobile coverage is patchy in the gullies behind town.
