Zacatecas is a UNESCO-listed silver-mining city at about 2,440 m, built into a narrow canyon. The historic centre is small and steep: cathedral, cable car to La Bufa, two mine tours and a mask museum. Two nights covers it; three if you add Guadalupe or La Quemada. It is a highland city, so nights are cold and the altitude is real.

Getting around

Walk the centro: it is small but steep, with stepped alleys and about 2,440 m of altitude. Taxis are metered by negotiation — agree the price before you get in. Uber and Didi work in the city. The Maxibus sightseeing loop leaves Plaza de Armas and takes about 45 min.
