- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European-founded city in the United States, founded by Spain in 1565, and its compact colonial core is walkable in a day. Most travellers need two nights: one full day for the fort, St. George Street and the Flagler buildings, and a second for the lighthouse, the beaches across the Bridge of Lions, or a side trip north to Jacksonville. It sits 40 minutes south of Jacksonville on Florida's First Coast, so it pairs naturally with a Jacksonville or Amelia Island stop.

Getting around
Walk the historic core: the fort, St. George Street, Flagler College and the Lightner Museum sit within about 1.5 km of each other. Two hop-on trolley loops cover the sights if you want a narrated overview, and both run shuttles to the beach attractions. A car is needed for Anastasia Island beaches, the outlet malls and day trips; park once at the Historic Downtown Parking Garage and continue on foot. Sunshine Bus Company runs local routes in St. Johns County.

Safety
- Summer heat and humidity are the real hazard: plan indoor or shaded stops between about 11:00 and 15:00, and carry water.Summer heat and humidity are the real hazard: plan indoor or shaded stops between about 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and carry water.
- Afternoon thunderstorms are routine from June to September; lightning near the bayfront and the fort is a genuine risk.
- Hurricane season runs June–November; the city has flooded in past storms, so check forecasts and evacuation zones before a late-summer trip.
- Downtown streets are narrow and shared with trolleys, carriages, bikes and pedestrians: park and walk rather than drive the core.
- Trolley and attraction tickets are sold at multiple booths; buy from the official operator or the attraction itself.
- Metered and garage parking fills on weekends and holidays; the Historic Downtown Parking Garage is the reliable fallback.

- Airport-to-bed contract for JAX: last rental-car desk hours, rideshare pickup point, taxi fallback and the drive time to each sleep area.
- Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: the fort and bayfront, St. George Street and the City Gates, Flagler College and the Lightner Museum, the lighthouse and Anastasia Island.
- Place pages with verified hours and ticket cutoffs (Castillo de San Marcos, Flagler College tours, the Oldest House, the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, the lighthouse) and eat pages with last orders.
- Heat, storm and hurricane fixtures so gates A–D can go green for summer and fall arrivals.
