La Orotava
Base here 1–2 nights for the historic centre and Teide trailheads; skip the car, park-and-ride from Puerto de la Cruz by bus 345 (€1.45, 20 min).
La Orotava is a 42,000-person town in the Orotava Valley, 5 km uphill from Puerto de la Cruz, with a protected 16th–18th-century centre and the largest municipality on Tenerife — most of Teide National Park sits inside its boundary. It works as a quiet, cheaper base for hikers and for anyone who wants the island's colonial architecture without the resort strip. One full day covers the centre; add a second for Teide or the coast.

Getting around
The centre is walkable but genuinely steep — 10–15 min uphill between the bus station and the plazas. Titsa long-distance buses double as the local network: 345 to Puerto de la Cruz (€1.45, 20 min), 101 to La Laguna (€3.15, 54 min), 108 to Santa Cruz (€4.30, 53 min). Driving in is easy via the TF-5; parking in the centre is very scarce, so use the edge-of-town car parks or come by bus.

Watch out
Safety
- Centre parking is very scarce — day-trippers should arrive by bus.
- Trails above the valley burned in the 2023 wildfires and large areas were closed; check the official Tenerife trail map before setting out.
- The two free mountain campsites (La Caldera, Ramón el Caminero) were closed after the fires — confirm before relying on them.
- Streets are steep and cobbled; wear shoes with grip.
- Many small restaurants close mid-afternoon and on Sundays.
