Thunder Bay is the Canadian Lakehead, the last big city at the head of Lake Superior and the natural break on a drive between Sault Ste. Marie and Winnipeg. It is spread out, car-friendly and best in summer: two nights covers the fur-trade fort, the falls and one big park day. Without a car, cut it to one night and stay downtown.

Getting around

Thunder Bay is two old towns, Fort William and Port Arthur, joined by a strip of malls, so walking only works inside each core. Thunder Bay Transit buses link them; taxis are the fast option. For Kakabeka Falls, Sleeping Giant, Ouimet Canyon and Eagle Canyon you need a car.

Safety

Thunder Bay is generally safe for visitors; the real risks are winter cold and long rural drives. Keep to lit downtown streets at night, lock the car, and carry water and a charged phone on any Lake Superior hike.
  • Distances between sights are long: budget 30–60 min each way by car.
  • Winter is severe; some parks and attractions close or run reduced hours from October.
  • Fort William Historical Park and Eagle Canyon hours vary by season: check before you drive out.
  • No passenger rail to Thunder Bay; the nearest VIA Rail stops are Longlac, Sioux Lookout and White River.
