Bunnik is a village of about 15,000 people on the Kromme Rijn, 8 minutes by sprinter train from Utrecht Centraal. Its two draws are the Hollandic Water Line forts at Vechten and Rhijnauwen, plus riverside walking and cycling. Almost nobody needs to sleep here: come for half a day from Utrecht, or stay one night at the hostel if you want the woods at your door.

Safety
- Fort bij Rhijnauwen is visitable on guided excursions only, mid-April to October, minimum age 10; outside those slots you see the moat from the path.
- The sprinter from Utrecht runs about every 30 min, and the last train back is early in the evening: check the NS app before a late dinner.
- Much of the fort land is nature reserve: stay on marked paths and keep to opening hours.
