Charleston is a former gold town of 5,000 people, now a hamlet of a few houses on State Highway 6 between Westport and Punakaiki. There is no town centre, no shop, no fuel and no public transport stop you can rely on. What is here: two narrow rocky bays with short cliff tracks, a glow-worm cave and rafting operator, a goldmine you can walk into, and a handful of beds. Come with a car, in daylight, and treat it as a two-hour leg of the coast drive rather than a destination.

Getting around

Car only. The village has no centre and the bays, mine and cemetery sit on different side roads off SH6. Walk the Constant Bay and Joyce Bay tracks on foot from Princess Street; drive to Mitchells Gully (4 km northeast) and the historic cemetery on Old Nile Road. No scheduled bus stops in the village; InterCity coaches run the Westport–Fox Glacier route past it (check current timetable and whether they will set down).

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high exposure: the real risks are unfenced cliff edges, loose rock, wet single-lane roads and no phone signal. Tell someone your track plan and carry rain gear.
  • No fuel, no supermarket and no ATM in the village: fill up and buy food in Westport or Punakaiki.
  • The cliff tracks above Constant Bay and Joyce Bay are unfenced and the rock is loose; the optional cliff spur is not for children.
  • Freedom camping is not permitted at Constant Bay or Joyce Bay.
  • Some accommodation and the pizzeria run a summer-only season (roughly Nov–May): check before you rely on them.
  • Phone coverage is patchy in the bays and valleys; download offline maps before the Buller Gorge or the coast road.
  • One-lane bridges and single-lane sections on SH6 and through the Buller Gorge: slow down and expect buses and trucks.
