Kalmar is a small, walkable Baltic town whose Renaissance castle and 17th-century cathedral sit within 15 minutes of each other, and whose station puts Copenhagen, Malmö and Gothenburg on direct trains. It works as a one-night stop on a south Sweden route, or as a two-night base if you add Öland across the bridge. Sightseeing itself is compact; the region around it is not.

Getting around
The centre is an island (Kvarnholmen) and everything worth seeing is a 5–20 min walk: station to cathedral about 5 min, cathedral to castle about 15 min. Local buses cover the outer districts. Driving in the centre is one-way streets with Swedish-only signage and almost no free parking, and paid lots often need a phone app — arrive by train if you can.
