Berkeley Springs is a small West Virginia spa town in the eastern panhandle, incorporated as Bath, about two hours by car from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Warm mineral water flows through the middle of downtown at roughly 1,500 gallons a minute, feeding a state-park bathhouse, private spas and free public taps. Downtown is four or five blocks and walkable in an afternoon; everything else — Cacapon Resort State Park, the castle on the ridge, the artists' studios — needs a car. Most visitors come for a single overnight of soaking, a meal and a walk, not a multi-day sightseeing trip.

Getting around

There is no public transport in town. Downtown is compact and walkable. Anything outside downtown — Cacapon park, the castle viewpoint, the studio tour — needs a car or a taxi. Greyhound stops in Hancock, Maryland, about a 10-minute taxi ride away; Amtrak's Capitol Limited serves Cumberland, Maryland, about a 40-minute taxi ride away.

A small, quiet town. The main practical risks are driving the two-lane mountain roads at night and winter ice on them (check conditions before a late drive); downtown is compact and walkable.
