Pengerang is the southeastern tip of Johor, a peninsula of fishing villages that now shares its coast with the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex. Travellers come for two things: lobster seafood in Sungai Rengit and the ferry jetty at Tanjung Pengelih, which links to Singapore. Public transport is close to non-existent, so plan around a car, a taxi or a rented bicycle.

Getting around

Public transport inside Pengerang is effectively absent. Taxis run between Tanjung Pengelih jetty and Sungai Rengit at negotiable prices — the opening ask is around RM40, so agree the fare before you get in. Bicycles can be rented in Sungai Rengit. With your own car, Sungai Rengit is about 35 km south of Desaru and about 120 km from Johor Bahru.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime, but the roads are the real risk: unlit coastal stretches, motorbikes and heavy industrial traffic. Carry cash, as smaller seafood places and taxis may not take cards.
  • Taxis from the jetty quote negotiable fares: settle the price before departure.
  • The British coastal battery at Pengelih has no trails, signs or facilities — it is a site in a state of nature.
  • Ferry services from Tanjung Pengelih and Tanjung Belungkor have been reduced: confirm the current schedule before you build a plan around a boat.
  • The petroleum complex dominates parts of the coastline; expect industrial views and traffic, not a resort strip.
