Stralsund is a Hanseatic port on the Baltic whose Gothic old town, together with Wismar's, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is compact enough to walk in a day, and it sits on the rail line between Rostock and Rügen, so most trips use it as one night or a half-day stop rather than a base.

Stralsund is a calm, low-crime small city; the real risks are Baltic weather, uneven cobbles and sparse late-night buses, so plan the walk back or take a taxi.
  • Weekend and holiday buses are sparse and none run overnight: check the last connection before an evening out.
  • Baltic weather changes fast; pack a rain layer even in July.
  • Speed cameras on the E 251/A 20 if you drive; the old town is largely car-free and parking is limited.
