Karaisalı

Skip as a base: no beds in the village, and the railway sights sit off the Pozantı side road. Come only as a day trip by car from Adana, Tarsus or Mersin.

Karaisalı is a mountain village of about 1,200 people on the north edge of the Cilician Plains, reached only by twisty rural roads. Its interest is the early-20th-century Berlin–Baghdad railway engineering in the Çakıt valley nearby — tunnels, viaducts and work camps — not the village itself. There is nowhere to sleep in Karaisalı; the nearest beds are municipal bungalows at Belemedik, and the sites are best seen by car from Adana, Tarsus or Mersin.

  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Check whether your passport is visa-exempt; if it is not, apply only at evisa.gov.tr — lookalike sites charge extra and some sell nothing.
  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗At mosques cover shoulders and knees, take shoes off at the door, and women carry a headscarf; stay out during prayer times.
  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Taxis must run the taximeter; refuse flat quotes, or book through BiTaksi or Uber so the ride is logged.
  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Carry lira in small notes for tea, markets, tips and toilets; prices move with inflation, so treat every printed price as dated.
  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Do not take stones, coins or tiles from ancient sites, and export no antiques without a museum certificate; travellers have been detained at airport customs.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need your own vehicle. There is no practical public transport to the railway sights: Adana city bus 188 runs roughly every two hours to Karaisalı village but does not go near the viaducts or tunnels. Roads 33-02 from Bucak and 01-75 from Salbaş are paved but narrow and twisty; allow more time than the distance suggests.

Belemedik and the Çakıt valley railway works

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way (check)

Drive from Karaisalı via the 33-02 and local lanes; the settlement is normally reached from the Pozantı side road

The reason to come: viaducts, tunnels and the old railway settlement. Stay off the tracks.

Door to door: About 1 h

Car via the 01-75 to Salbaş then the O-21, or bus 188 to Karaisalı's bus point

Regional capital with hotels, food and the Sabancı mosque; the sensible base.

Pozantı and the Gülek Pass

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Car via the O-21 north

Highway town with the classic Cilician Gates approach; sights described on that page.

Tarsus

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Car south to the plains then east on the O-21

Historic town where roads and rail split west to Mersin and east to Adana.

Mersin

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Car south-west via Tarsus

Long for a return day trip; better as an overnight on the coast.

Konyaovernight

Door to door: About 4 h

Car north via Pozantı and the O-21

Seljuk monuments and the Mevlana museum; too far to return the same day.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Karaisalı village

No hotels or guesthouses: plan to sleep elsewhere.

Belemedik (Pozantı district)

Municipality-run bungalows and a small hillside hotel above the Çakıt canyon, reached from the Pozantı side; the practical base for the railway sights. 2026 estimate: B&B double about ₺5,000 at the bungalows, about ₺4,000 at the hillside hotel (check).

Adana

Full range of hotels, about 1 h by car; the usual base for a day trip.

Pozantı

Highway town on the O-21 with simple hotels and food, about 45 min by car.

High
₺3,500 (≈ US$90)+ excl. bed (2026 estimate)

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, real road risk. The dangers here are narrow unlit mountain roads, an active freight railway and patchy phone signal: drive in daylight, stay off the tracks and tell someone your route.
  • No accommodation, no ATM certainty and few services in Karaisalı village: fuel and cash up before you leave the plains.
  • The railway is active with freight even though passenger service is sparse: never walk on or beside the tracks.
  • Mountain roads are narrow, unlit and twisting; avoid driving them after dark.
  • Summer heat and sun on exposed valley roads; carry water.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: Türk Telekom has the best 4G coverage here, Turkcell and Vodafone are weak.
