MontgomeryMontgomery, Alabama

Give Montgomery 2 nights: one full day for the civil-rights sites downtown, half a day for the Legacy Museum and the lynching memorial.

Montgomery is Alabama's capital and the hinge of the civil-rights story: Rosa Parks' arrest, the 381-day bus boycott, and the church where Martin Luther King Jr. preached. Downtown is compact and walkable; the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice sit a short drive apart and need booking. Two nights covers the core. Summer heat and humidity are the main practical problem, not crime in the tourist core.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable between the Capitol, Dexter Avenue and the riverfront. For the Legacy Museum, the memorial and anything east of Eastern Boulevard you need a car or a rideshare; MATS buses and trolleys exist but are slow and thin. Parking downtown is metered on weekdays.

Watch out

Safety

The downtown tourist core is fine by day and early evening. The real risks are summer heat, spring storms and car break-ins: keep doors locked, avoid the west and southwest blocks after dark, and use rideshares at night.
  • Summer heat and humidity: plan outdoor sightseeing before 11:00 and after 17:00, and carry water.
  • Spring brings severe thunderstorms and a tornado risk; check the forecast before a long drive.
  • Some west and southwest neighbourhoods have higher crime; keep car doors locked and stay in the downtown and eastern areas after dark.
  • The Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice use timed entry: book online before you travel.
  • Prices in shops and restaurants are shown before sales tax; tipping 18–22% at sit-down restaurants is expected.
