  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Winston-Salem is the western anchor of North Carolina's Piedmont Triad, about 30 minutes by car from Greensboro and roughly 1.5 hours from Charlotte or Raleigh. It pairs a restored Moravian town (Old Salem) with a Gilded Age estate (Reynolda) and a compact downtown arts district. Most visitors come for a single overnight or as a day trip from Greensboro; two nights let you add the museums and a ballgame without rushing.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown is walkable, but the sights are spread out: Old Salem is about a 20-minute walk from Trade Street, Reynolda about 10 minutes by car. Winston-Salem Transit Authority buses run local routes for $1 a ride ($0.50 for elderly and disabled; children under the farebox height ride free with an adult) with free transfers. Taxis and rideshare are thin outside downtown; a car is the practical choice for the museums and day trips.

Watch out

Safety

Winston-Salem is a normal mid-size Southern city: downtown and the museum districts are fine on foot in daylight, and the usual advice applies after dark — stay on lit streets, keep to the areas you know, and use a car or rideshare rather than walking far at night.
  • No passenger rail to Winston-Salem: Amtrak serves Greensboro, about 30 minutes away by car.
  • Summer afternoons in Jul–Aug are hot and humid; plan indoor museums for midday.
  • Some Old Salem shops keep different hours from the main buildings: check before you go.
  • Rideshare can be scarce late at night outside the downtown core.
