Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Whitby is a small North Yorkshire coastal town where the River Esk meets the North Sea, known for its ruined clifftop abbey, its whaling and Captain Cook history, and its Dracula connection. It is compact enough to walk in a day, but the surrounding moors, steam railway and coastal villages reward a second night. Summer weekends are crowded and parking in town is effectively impossible, so arrive by train or use the park and ride.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 min end to end, but the east bank is steep: the 199 Steps climb from Church Street to St Mary's Church and the abbey, or take the gentler Green Lane. Local buses run along the coast to Sandsend and Robin Hood's Bay but stay inland, so they are little use for beach hopping. Taxis are plentiful for late nights and station runs.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Robin Hood's Bay

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Bus or the Cinder Track on foot or by bike; by car park at the village edge

Do not drive the 1-in-3 lane down to the harbour.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Grosmont or Pickering

go

Door to door: 20 min to Grosmont; about 1 h 45 min to Pickering

Steam train from Whitby station, summer only

Most trains terminate at Grosmont; check the operator's timetable, not National Rail.

Sandsend and Runswick Bay

go

Door to door: 10–30 min by bus

Bus X4 along the coast, or the Cleveland Way clifftop path

The beach walk to Sandsend is about 2 miles.

Scarborough

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus X93/X94, about 1 h; or the Cinder Track by bike

A full day if you add the castle headland.

York

skip

Door to door: 2.5–3.5 h

Train via Middlesbrough, or bus via Malton

Too long for a day return; sleep in York instead.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

West Cliff and the station area

B&Bs, hotels and the tourist information office; 5–10 min walk to the harbour and bridge.

Church Street and the east bank

Pubs with rooms and the foot of the 199 Steps; atmospheric but hilly and noisier.

Abbey House, East Cliff

YHA hostel beside the abbey ruins; best value for walkers, uphill from town.

Ravenscar and the Esk valley

Out-of-town hotels and B&Bs for drivers; 15–30 min by car.

Watch out

Safety

Whitby is a low-crime small town and safe to walk at night; the real risks are steep wet steps, fast-changing tides on the beach, cold water and icy moor roads in winter.
  • Parking in town is impossible on summer weekends: use the Guisborough Road park and ride (Apr–Oct, from 08:00 to dusk; the bus ticket covers parking).
  • Moor roads have sharp bends and steep gradients and can close in winter; the A169 descent into Sleights is 25%.
  • Swimming off Whitby beach is cold and there is a brisk shoreline current; the beach is covered at high tide.
  • Dogs are banned on the busiest beach sections May–Sep (the middle Upgang section and Tate Hill beach stay open to them).
  • Book accommodation and the Goth Weekend dates well ahead; late April and Halloween fill the town.

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Whitby. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

  1. Best months: May–Jun, Sep · avoid Jul–Aug weekends (crowds), winter (some closures and icy moor roads) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for MME, MAN and LBA: last rail and bus departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: station and West Cliff, the harbour bridge, Church Street and the 199 Steps, the abbey plateau.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Whitby Abbey, Captain Cook Museum, Whitby Museum, YHA) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Tide, park-and-ride and Goth Weekend fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
