Sioux Lookout is a small rail-and-floatplane town on Pelican Lake, about 350 km northwest of Thunder Bay, in the region marketed as Sunset Country. Almost all visitors come for the water: walleye and northern pike fishing, canoe routes, and fly-in camps on Lac Seul and Minnitaki Lake. The town itself is a service centre for northern First Nations communities, so beds fill with workers as well as anglers. Two nights is enough unless you are on a guided fishing package.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk between the station, lakefront and restaurants. For fishing lakes, beaches and the provincial park you need a car, a lodge shuttle or a boat; there is no local transit network worth planning around. Taxis exist but are limited.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime and a calm town centre; the real risks are water, weather and wildlife. Wear a life jacket on any boat, tell someone your route, and do not swim alone in cold lake water.
  • Book beds ahead in summer: fishing parties and workers fill the few hotels.
  • Blackflies and mosquitoes are heavy from late June to August; bring repellent.
  • Cell and data coverage is patchy outside town; download offline maps.
  • Winter driving on Highway 72 is ice and moose territory: daylight only.
