Murcia is Spain's seventh-largest city, inland on the Segura river about 40 km from the coast. It is a working university city, not a resort: the draw is a compact old town of baroque churches, the Salzillo museum, a strong tapas-and-wine scene and the huerta farmland around it. Most travellers see it in a day, or use it as a cheaper base for Cartagena and the Mar Menor.

The old town is flat and walkable; most sights sit within 15 minutes of the cathedral. City buses cover the outer districts and the train station. For Cartagena, the Mar Menor or Sierra Espuña you need a car, bus or train.

Watch out

Safety

Murcia is a calm, walkable city and one of Spain's safer big towns; the real risks are summer heat, pickpockets in the Trapería shopping streets and bars with no posted prices.
  • Summer afternoons are genuinely hot inland: shift sightseeing to morning and evening.
  • Many kitchens close 16:00–20:00; lunch is the main meal.
  • The Lorca and Andalusia rail line has been closed for high-speed works: check current train times before planning.
  • Some bars have no posted prices for tapas: ask the total before ordering rounds.
