Give Cherbourg one full day and one night, or use it as a ferry port with a half-day: Cité de la Mer plus the old town covers it.
Cherbourg-en-Cotentin is a Channel port at the tip of the Cotentin Peninsula, formed in 2016 from five former communes. Most travellers arrive by ferry from England or Ireland, or by train from Paris. The draw is the Cité de la Mer submarine and aquarium, the Liberation museum hill and a compact old town; the Cotentin coast and D-Day country are the wider reason to stay.

Safety
- Ferry arrivals on foot face a long roundabout route to the centre; take the free shuttle toward the Cité de la Mer or a taxi.
- Trains to and from Paris are few and often delayed: build slack into a same-day ferry or flight connection.
- Parking near the old town is limited and paid during the day.
- The Château des Ravalet building opens only occasionally; the gardens are the reliable part.
