St. Joseph Island is the second-largest island in Lake Huron, about 2,300 residents, reached by a free bridge off Highway 17 south of Sault Ste. Marie. It is camp and cottage country: a War of 1812 fort ruin, Ontario's biggest maple syrup area, small beaches and a 68 km loop road. Most travellers pass through in a day; one or two nights suits slow drivers, cyclists and families.

Getting around

You need a car. Highway 548 crosses the free Bernt Gilbertson Bridge and then loops 68 km around the island, with side roads every 2 km, some still gravel. Fuel and groceries are in Richards Landing; hours are seasonal, so check before a late or winter arrival.

Safety

Low-crime rural island; the real risks are deer on the road, no lifeguards at beaches and long gaps between fuel, cell coverage and open businesses outside summer.
  • Deer step out of fields and woods at any hour, year-round: slow down at dawn and dusk.
  • Rural drivers and summer residents do not expect cyclists or pedestrians on the loop road.
  • No lifeguards at any island beach.
  • Many businesses are seasonal: confirm hours before a winter or shoulder-season trip.
  • Cell coverage away from the villages is patchy: check your carrier's map before relying on it.
