Agios Nikolaos is a working Cretan town on Mirabello Bay, not a resort strip. It works as a base for eastern Crete: Spinalonga, Kritsa, Elounda and the beaches at Almyros and Istron are all within an hour. Two nights covers the town and one boat trip; three or more lets you use it as a base for the east.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: lake, harbour and Kitroplatia are within 15 minutes on foot. KTEL buses run to Heraklion, Elounda, Kritsa, Sitia, Malia and Hersonissos and are good value. Taxis are metered and plentiful. Scooters and quads are rented widely; helmets are compulsory and quads on the road are a known accident source.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime town; the real risks are summer heat, sea conditions on boat days and quads on the road. Emergency 112 works everywhere.
  • Quad bikes on public roads cause a share of local accidents: think hard before renting one.
  • Boat trips to Spinalonga leave from Agios Nikolaos and Elounda; confirm the operator, departure point and return time before paying.
  • Almyros has a cold freshwater stream at the southern end; the sea is colder there than elsewhere in the bay.
  • In July and August the midday heat is the main risk: swim early, shade at 13:00–17:00.
  • Many tavernas and hotels close from November to March; check before booking a winter trip.
