Senneterre is a forestry town of about 3,000 people on the Bell River, 60 km northeast of Val-d'Or. It is the departure point for outfitters and snowmobile trails, and the weekly VIA Rail wilderness train stops here. The town itself is small: a beach, a falls walk, a pool and a handful of motels. Most travellers use it for one night or skip it.

No public transit. The town centre is compact and walkable. A car is needed for the beach, the golf club, the ski trails and the outfitters; Route 113 is the only paved link, to Val-d'Or in the south and Chibougamau in the north.

Safety

A quiet town with low street crime. The real risks are bush roads, weather and wildlife: tell someone your route, carry water and bear spray, and do not drive Route 113 at night in winter if you can avoid it.
  • Fuel and groceries are limited; fill up in Val-d'Or if you are heading north on Route 113.
  • Black flies and mosquitoes are heavy from late May to July; bring repellent and a head net.
  • Cell coverage drops fast on the bush roads and the rail line; download offline maps.
  • Winter driving: Route 113 can be snow-covered and plowed late; check conditions before leaving.
  • The VIA Rail service is a request stop and runs once a week each way: a missed train means a long wait.
