Abilene sits on I-20 in the North Central Plains, about 2.5 h west of Fort Worth and 1.5 h north of San Angelo. It is a drive-through city with a compact downtown museum cluster, three university campuses and a steakhouse run south of town. Most travellers sleep one night and leave in the morning.
