Destination OS · Souks by morning, the square by night

Marrakechمراكش

Marrakech is a morning-and-evening medina: souks and palaces before 11:00, indoors or in a courtyard at midday, the square after sunset — and the riad meets you at a named gate, because taxis cannot reach the door.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • North Africa ↗Plan links between North African countries by air or by ferry via Europe; the only regularly usable land borders for visitors are Tunisia–Algeria and Morocco–Mauritania via Western Sahara.
  • North Africa ↗Book Saharan nights (dunes, desert camps, oasis tours) between October and April; from May to September desert day temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C and many tours stop.
  • Morocco ↗Check entry rules for your passport with the Moroccan consulate or official government sources before booking; visa exemptions depend on nationality.
  • Morocco ↗The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency: you normally obtain it on arrival (ATMs, exchange desks) and change leftovers back before departure, keeping exchange receipts.
  • Morocco ↗Do not bring a drone without prior authorisation: drones are routinely confiscated at customs.
  • Morocco ↗During Ramadan, do not eat, drink or smoke in the street in daylight; tourist restaurants and hotels still serve.
  • Marrakech and the High Atlas ↗Dec–Feb: snow can close the Tizi n'Tichka pass and mountain roads for hours or days; ask your driver about the road before you leave.

Decide

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Marrakech's sights sit inside a few square kilometres, but the medina is a maze that taxis cannot enter, the sun is hard from May to September, and touts work every corner. The trips that go wrong lose the first evening looking for the riad, walk the souks at noon in July, or accept a stranger's help with directions. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; the High Atlas and Essaouira are trips away from one kept bed.

Fits

  • Culture and market trips
  • Early risers
  • Short city breaks with a day-trip

Does not fit

  • Wheelchairs and strollers (uneven lanes, no cars)
  • Travellers who dislike haggling and touts
  • Midday walkers in summer
2 days
Jemaa el-Fnaa + souks, Bahia and Saadian Tombs in the morning

Don't confuse
The medina (walled old city) and Gueliz (the French-built new town, 2–3 km north-west) are different districts; most sights are in the medina.

Off the map: Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) (20–40 min by the usual route).

Where’s what, as a list:

  • Jemaa el-Fnaa & Koutoubia: Evening cluster: the great square comes alive after sunset with food stalls; the Koutoubia minaret is a landmark from outside, and the square itself is your meeting point with the riad.
  • Souks & Mouassine: Morning cluster: covered souks, Ben Youssef Madrasa and the Mouassine lanes; go before 11:00, when lanes are quiet and cooler.
  • Kasbah & Mellah: Morning cluster: Bahia Palace, El Badi ruins and the Saadian Tombs are all within ten minutes on foot; go when they open, before tour buses.
  • Majorelle & Yves Saint Laurent Garden: Half-day outside the medina: the garden opens with a timed ticket; go first thing and come back by taxi.
  • Sleep area Kasbah — Riad Zitoun (riad): suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
  • Sleep area Medina — Mouassine (riad): suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
  • Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), 20–40 min by the usual route.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • Courtyard riads
  • Souks and craft
  • Evening street food on the square

You will hate

  • Touts and pressure to buy
  • Summer heat
  • Getting lost in lanes

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster; petit taxi (meter on) between clusters and to the medina gates.
Passes
No pass. Short petit-taxi rides are cheap when the meter runs; agree the fare first if the driver refuses.
Last trains
No metro; petit taxis run late but thin out after midnight. Ask your riad to call one for your last night.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Taxis stop at a medina gate or square, not at the riad door: send your flight number and ask the riad to meet you at a named gate with a porter.
Lockers
No public lockers; riads hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding culture; keep the big bag at the riad for trips away.
Dead zone
Early flights: settle the bill the night before and book the taxi through the riad.

Survive

Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.

Safety

  • Touts and false guides: ignore anyone who offers directions or says a lane is closed; use offline maps.
  • Heat (May–Sep): shade and water every hour; move sightseeing to before 11:00 and after 17:00.
  • Bag snatching from mopeds in the medina lanes: carry bags on the side away from the lane, phone out of hand near traffic.
  • Emergency: 19 police (cities), 15 ambulance and fire.

Red lines

  • Do not take photos of women or performers on Jemaa el-Fnaa without asking; expect a tip.
  • Most mosques, including the Koutoubia, are closed to non-Muslims: look from outside.
  • Ramadan: do not eat, drink or smoke in the street in daylight.

Practical

  • Toilets: cafés and larger restaurants; carry small coins and tissues.
  • Tap water: drink bottled or filtered water.
