Marrakech is a morning-and-evening medina: souks and palaces before 11:00, indoors or in a courtyard at midday, the square after sunset — and the riad meets you at a named gate, because taxis cannot reach the door.

The honest verdict

Marrakech's sights sit inside a few square kilometres, but the medina is a maze that taxis cannot enter, the sun is hard from May to September, and touts work every corner. The trips that go wrong lose the first evening looking for the riad, walk the souks at noon in July, or accept a stranger's help with directions. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; the High Atlas and Essaouira are trips away from one kept bed.
