  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Romania ↗Romania is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Romanian sources for your passport.
  • Romania ↗Drivers need an electronic road vignette (rovinieta) on national roads; rental cars normally include it, but check.
  • Romania ↗Brown bears live in the Carpathians and sometimes enter towns and roadsides: never feed or approach them, and follow local warnings.

Vama Veche is a small Black Sea village on the Bulgarian border, about 1 h 30 min south of Constanța by road. It is a low-rise, barefoot beach-and-bar place: camping, cheap rooms, fried fish and 24-hour beachfront drinking in high season. Two nights covers it; one night is enough if you only want the beach and a night out. Outside July and August it is largely closed.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

On foot. The village is small enough to cross in about 15 minutes; bring flip-flops or go barefoot on the sand. Cars are only useful for arriving and leaving. Buses and minibuses run along the E87 to Mangalia and Constanța.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Mangalia

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Minibus or bus north on the E87

Nearest town with the train station, shops and a larger beach.

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Bus or minibus north on the E87

Old town, port and museums; doable as a full day.

Mamaia

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

Bus to Constanța, then local transport to Mamaia

Long for a day return; better as a move north than a round trip.

Durankulak and the Bulgarian coast

caution

Door to door: About 30–60 min to the border area

Car or bus across the E87 border crossing

Bring your passport or ID card; check current border and vehicle rules.

Jurilovca and the Danube Delta edge

overnight

Door to door: 3 h+

Car via Mangalia and Constanța, or bus with changes

Too far for a day return; sleep there.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Beach and seafront

Camping on the sand and the closest bars; noisier, sand in everything, cheapest.

Village lanes (Str. Falezei and around)

Guesthouses, homestays and small hotels a 5–10 min walk from the beach; quieter.

E87 entrance (Golden Sea / Punk Rock side)

Where buses drop you; handy with bags, a 10–15 min walk to the water.

Watch out

Safety

A small, low-crime beach village; the real risks are high-season drinking, cold water outside Jul–Aug, unposted bar tabs and the Bulgarian border, which you should only cross at the official E87 checkpoint.
  • High-season weekends are loud and crowded; book beds ahead or expect to camp.
  • Cash is king in the village; some bars and stalls take no card.
  • Sea is cold outside Jul–Aug; lifeguards are seasonal.
  • Do not cross to Bulgaria on foot through the dirt tracks at the village edge — use the official E87 crossing.
  • Stray dogs have been reported near the village edge; keep distance.
  • Prices at beachfront bars can be high and sometimes unposted: ask the total before ordering.
