Washington is a planned New Town in Tyne and Wear, built from 1964 around older mining villages, with no real centre except the Galleries shopping complex. It has two sights worth a stop — Washington Old Hall, ancestral home of George Washington's family, and the WWT wetland reserve — plus a Nissan plant that employs around 7,000 people. Most travellers sleep here for the cheap motorway hotels and drive out to Newcastle, Sunderland or Durham.

Getting around

The district is spread out over roughly 15 tracts and buses are slow between them; a car is the practical choice. Go North East runs the X1 from Newcastle Eldon Square via Gateshead to Washington (about 35 min) every 30 min, bus 2 from Sunderland every 30 min, and buses 8 and 50 hourly. The bus station is at Washington Galleries. Newcastle Central is the most useful rail station; Sunderland is a similar distance with fewer trains.

Safety

A low-crime suburban town; the real issues are unlit paths between tracts, traffic on the A1(M) and A19, and drinking in Newcastle rather than here.
  • No railway station in town: you arrive by bus, car or taxi.
  • Long-distance coaches do not stop here; change at Newcastle.
  • The Washington 'F' Pit Museum opens only occasionally in summer — check before travelling.
  • Lambton Castle is closed as a wedding venue and not open to visitors; view the exterior from the riverside footpath only.
  • Motorway service-area hotels sit on the A1(M): from the northbound side you drive several miles to get into town.
