Romsey is a small Test Valley market town of about 14,000 people, 5 minutes on foot from its station to a high street built around Romsey Abbey, the largest parish church in Hampshire. The town itself fills an easygoing half day; the reasons to sleep here are Mottisfont, the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and the northern edge of the New Forest. Trains run hourly to Southampton, Salisbury, Bath and Cardiff, so it works as a quiet stop on a wider rail trip rather than a destination in its own right.

Local buses run to Ampfield, Braishfield and the villages, and a free summer Sunday and bank-holiday minibus links the centre with Romsey and Mottisfont & Dunbridge stations and the outlying gardens. For Mottisfont, Paultons Park or the New Forest you want a car or a taxi.
