Charlotte is the largest city in the Carolinas and the second-biggest US banking centre, but it reads as a spread-out Southern city with a compact, walkable Uptown core. Most visitors use it as a 2-night stop: museums and the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Uptown, then a light-rail hop to South End or NoDa for food and bars. A car helps for the outer districts and day trips.

Getting around
Uptown is walkable, and the LYNX Blue Line light rail links Uptown with South End and University City. CATS buses cover the rest, but most of Charlotte is suburban and spread inside I-485: a car or rideshare is the practical option for SouthPark, Ballantyne, Steele Creek and day trips. Parking in Uptown is paid and can be expensive on event nights.
