Beverley is the county town of East Yorkshire, a market town of about 19,000 people that skipped heavy industry. Its two medieval churches, the surviving North Bar gate and the open Westwood heath sit inside a 15-minute walk of each other, so a single day covers the town. Most visitors come from Hull (15 min by train) or use it as a base for the Yorkshire Wolds and the coast. Two nights is the practical maximum before you have seen it.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes; there is no need for local transport. Trains run roughly twice an hour to Hull (15 min) and on toward Bridlington and Scarborough; East Yorkshire buses X46/X47 link York, Beverley and Hull, and bus 246 continues to Hornsea. A car helps for the Wolds and the coast.

Beverley is a low-crime market town and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are the weather, uneven pavements and cobbles, and drinking on an empty stomach in the older pubs.
  • Trains to Hull are roughly twice hourly and stop early evening; check the last service before a late return.
  • Race days fill the town's hotels and pubs: book ahead if your dates clash with a fixture.
  • Some pubs and restaurants close on Mondays and Tuesdays; check before you plan a meal out.
  • The Westwood is open common land with grazing cattle: keep dogs under control and shut gates.
