Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city and main port, hot and humid year-round, with a regenerated riverside core that is walkable and guarded. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Galápagos or the coast; one or two nights covers the Malecón 2000, Las Peñas and the iguanas of Parque Seminario. It is a working port city, not a colonial showpiece, and the safe zone is narrow.

Getting around

Metrovía BRT runs north–south and east–west, fare about $0.25 (check); match the bus code to your station. Taxis are unmetered: agree the price before you get in. Uber and Cabify work in the city and give fixed pricing. There is no metro. Downtown sights are close enough to walk in daylight.

Watch out

Safety

Guayaquil is a high-crime city with a safe, patrolled tourist core. Stay inside the regenerated downtown and Urdesa after dark, use app taxis, keep phones out of sight, and treat the bus terminal and La Bahía market as pickpocket zones.
  • Street crime is the main risk: phone snatching and pickpocketing on buses and in markets. Carry a cheap phone, no visible jewellery.
  • Use app taxis or hotel-ordered taxis, especially after dark; not every yellow cab is safe.
  • La Bahía market and the bus terminal are known for theft — keep bags in front.
  • Do not walk outside the regenerated downtown zone at night.
  • January to April brings heavy rain and flooding on some streets.
