Kemi is an industrial harbour town of about 22,000 people on the Gulf of Bothnia, not a Lappish village. Two things pull travellers off the train: the Lumilinna snow castle, rebuilt each winter, and the Sampo icebreaker cruise out of Ajos. Both are winter-only and both are expensive. The rest of the town is an ordinary Finnish grid you can walk in an afternoon, which is why most trips here are one night, or a stop between Oulu and Rovaniemi.

Walk. The centre is a flat grid and everything in town is within about 20 minutes on foot. Local buses run only a few times a day, so for Ajos, Keminmaa or Pohjanranta you drive, take a taxi, or use the cruise company's bus. Matkahuolto's app plans and sells regional bus tickets.

Watch out

Safety

Kemi is a quiet, safe small city; the real risks are winter cold, ice on pavements and short daylight. Keep to lit streets, dress for -20 °C (−4 °F) in Jan–Feb, and use 112 for emergencies.
  • The snow castle is seasonal and rebuilt each year: dates and entry price change, so check before you book a trip around it.
  • The icebreaker bus from Kemi to Ajos is a separate charge and must be reserved with the cruise; it is not cheap.
  • Winter days are short: in December and January daylight is only a few hours, so plan outdoor sights for late morning.
  • Kemi is an industrial town with pulp and paper mills; do not expect fell or wilderness scenery inside the town.
