Albany, New YorkAlbany

Give Albany one full day for the Capitol, Empire State Plaza and the State Museum, then use it as a base for Saratoga, Troy and the Hudson Valley.

Albany is New York State's capital and the oldest continuously chartered city in the United States, with four centuries of architecture stacked between the Hudson River and Washington Park. Most travellers pass through on I-87 or I-90, but one night and one full day covers the free Capitol tour, the Empire State Plaza and the State Museum. Two nights lets you add a day trip to Saratoga Springs or Troy.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown sights are walkable. CDTA buses cover the city and the region (local fare about $1.50, day pass about $3.90 with a Navigator card — check current fares); BusPlus BRT links Albany and Schenectady. Sunday service is very limited. Taxis use zone fares, not meters: agree the price before you get in. A car helps for the Pine Bush, Saratoga and the malls.

Watch out

Safety

Albany is a normal US capital city: fine by day in the centre, more care after dark around the bus station and lower State Street. The real annoyances are unmetered taxis and thin Sunday bus service.
  • Taxis are not metered — call ahead and confirm the zone fare.
  • Albany–Rensselaer Amtrak station is across the river in Rensselaer, not downtown; taxi fares from it are high.
  • Washington Park is fine by day but take care after dark.
  • Winter brings snow and ice from December to March; summer is humid.
  • Capitol tours require photo ID and a security screening.
