Torroella de Montgrí is a small inland town on the Costa Brava, 5 km from its own beach resort of L'Estartit and about 40 minutes by bus from Girona. It was the royal port of the Kings of Aragon before Palamós took over, and it still works as a crossroads for the Baix Empordà. The draw is the unfinished 13th-century Montgrí castle on the hill above town, a porticoed main square, and the flat farmland and wetlands of the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park. It is a two-night stop, not a week.

Getting around

The town itself is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Bikes are the practical way to reach L'Estartit and the Ter river mouth, and several campsites rent them. Buses run between Torroella and L'Estartit through the day; a car is the easy option for the beaches, Pals and the coves.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, low-crime small town; the genuine risks are the exposed castle trail, summer heat, and swimming where the Medes currents and boat traffic are strong — use a lifeguarded beach.
  • The castle trail climbs from near sea level to about 300 m with no water or shade on the way: start early, carry 1.5–2 L per person, wear shoes with grip.
  • The town-side path to the castle is marked but easy to lose in places and steep in spots; the longer back-side route is gentler.
  • Many L'Estartit hotels, campsites and restaurants close from November to March; check before booking a winter trip.
  • Summer afternoon heat on the plain is real; the castle is a morning walk, not a midday one.
