  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Suquamish is a small community on the Port Madison Indian Reservation, home of the Suquamish tribe and the burial place of Chief Seattle. The sights sit within a short walk or drive of each other and the whole visit fits into half a day, so most travellers pair it with Poulsbo or Bainbridge Island rather than staying overnight.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable from the public dock, but the museum, Old Man House Park and the cemetery are spread over about 2 km, so a car or bike helps. Kitsap Transit buses serve the area and connect to the ferry terminals; a free shuttle runs between the Bainbridge Island and Kingston ferry docks and the Clearwater Casino Resort.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 15 min

SR-305 north by car, about 10 min

Walkable downtown with bakeries and a waterfront park; the easiest add-on to a Suquamish half-day.

Door to door: About 20 min

SR-305 south by car, about 15 min

Ferry to Seattle from here; the town of Winslow has shops and cafés.

Door to door: About 30 min

SR-104 and SR-3 by car, about 25 min

Ferry to Edmonds and a small marina; combine with a north Kitsap loop.

Bremertoncaution

Door to door: About 45 min

SR-3 south by car, about 35 min

Ferry to Seattle and a naval museum; a half-day on its own, not a quick stop.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Clearwater Casino Resort

The only hotel in Suquamish: 85 waterfront rooms, 4 restaurants, pool and spa; check-in 4 PM, check-out 11 AM.

Poulsbo

About 10 min north on SR-305; more rooms and restaurants, and a walkable downtown.

Bainbridge Island

About 15 min south; ferry to Seattle, so best if you are crossing the water the next morning.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are wet, dark roads after rain, deer at dusk on SR-305, and cold Puget Sound water: wear a life jacket on the water and do not swim far from shore.
  • Distances between the museum, the park and the cemetery are longer than they look on a map: plan on driving between them.
  • The public dock is free for short daytime tie-ups only; overnight moorage is limited to tribal vessels.
  • Summer weekends fill the resort and the Poulsbo hotels: book ahead.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the water and on some back roads.
