Batu Karas is a small fishing village on Java's south coast, about an hour from Pangandaran, built around one long, forgiving right-hand wave. Two to three nights is enough: surf in the morning, eat at the beach warungs, and use the village as a base for Green Canyon and Citumang. It is a Muslim area, so dress more modestly than in Bali, and evenings end early.

Getting around
The village is walkable, so you only need transport for the surrounding breaks and the countryside. Ojeks are the only public transport in town; a rented scooter costs about Rp40,000–60,000 per day. Roads toward Pangandaran are potholed and often under repair, so ride slowly and avoid them after dark.

Safety
- This is a Muslim area: bikinis on the beach are not the norm — cover up away from the sand.
- Jellyfish and bluebottles swarm the calmer water at times; a light springsuit helps in the cooler months.
- The road from Pangandaran is potholed and frequently under construction — allow extra time.
