Grand Island sits on I-80 in South Central Nebraska, about 2.5 h west of Omaha and 1.5 h east of North Platte. It is a working plains city of roughly 51,000 people, not a resort town: the draw is the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, the Platte River crane migration in March, and a bed between driving days. Two nights is enough if you add the Crane Trust and the Mormon Trail ruts; one night covers the museum.
