Madrid is a former coal town of about 200 people on State Highway 14, 45 minutes south of Santa Fe. The mines closed in the 1950s and artists moved in from the 1970s; today Main Street is a short strip of galleries, a soda fountain and a tavern. It is a half-day stop or a lunch break on the drive, not a place to build a trip around, unless you come for the December Christmas celebration.

Getting around

You need a car. SR 14 runs through town and there is no useful bus service to Madrid. Once parked, everything on Main Street is a 5–10 minute walk, but there are no pavements separated from traffic in places, so watch for cars and walk facing them.

Safety

Madrid is a small, quiet town and feels safe in daylight. The real risks are the highway through the middle, unmarked pedestrian space, and abandoned mine ground: stay out of mine structures and off closed land.
  • Do not enter abandoned mine structures: they can collapse and can hold methane that displaces breathable air.
  • Parking is scarce on busy weekends and during the December celebration; arrive before midday.
  • Main Street has little separation between pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Some galleries and the soda fountain keep short or seasonal hours: check before driving out.
