Chilika Lake is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a narrow sandy spit. It functions less as a traditional park and more as a complex wetland ecosystem designated under the Ramsar Convention. The lake supports over 150 species of birds, including flamingos that migrate from Siberia and Iran in winter, and hosts one of the world's few populations of Irrawaddy dolphins near Satapada. Visitor access is primarily via boat from three main hubs: Barkul, Rambha, and Satapada. Nalabana Island serves as a core bird sanctuary where motorized entry is restricted to protect nesting grounds.

Outboard motors are not allowed near the sanctuary; go with a local boatman or an OTDC boat and keep your distance from the nesting island.

How much does it cost to enter Chilika Lake?

There is no single gate fee for the lagoon. You pay for boats: OTDC boats at Barkul and Rambha cost about ₹410–790 per hour depending on size, the Barkul–Kalijai tour is about ₹40 per person, and Rambha island circuits run about ₹875 for three islands or ₹1,650 for five. A Satapada dolphin boat is roughly ₹800–2,000 per boat (2026 estimates).

What are the best hikes in Chilika Lake?

Chilika is a lagoon, not a walking park — there are no marked hill trails. The walking you do is on the islands and marshes: the Mangalajodi community wetland, where a guide rows and walks you along the channels, the sand strip at the Chilika sea mouth, and short walks on Kalijai and the Rambha islands. Bird Island and Breakfast Island are reached by boat, not on foot.

When is the best time to visit Chilika Lake?

November to February. Migratory birds arrive from October and stay until March, with the largest numbers in January; days are mild and the water is calm. Avoid June to September, when the monsoon floods Nalabana and boats are frequently stopped.

Can I see Irrawaddy dolphins?

Only at Satapada, and never guaranteed. They are resident in the lagoon and surface briefly; go early in the morning on a calm day and ask the boatman to drift rather than chase.

Which shore should I base on?

Barkul for the shortest trip from Bhubaneswar and the Kalijai temple; Rambha for quieter island boat trips and the best OTDC rooms; Satapada for dolphins and the sea mouth, easiest from Puri. Mangalajodi suits birders who want a dawn start.

Are the pearls sold at the lake real?

No. Freshwater oysters are brought in from elsewhere and opened in front of buyers to look natural, and the pearls are cultured. Sellers also push 'black pearls'. Skip them.
