WoodbridgeWoodbridge, Virginia
Give Woodbridge one night, two if you shop Potomac Mills and walk Occoquan: it is a cheap I-95 base for DC, not a destination on its own.
Woodbridge is a Prince William County suburb on the I-95 corridor between Washington, DC and Richmond, and most travellers use it as a bed base rather than a sight. The draw is Potomac Mills outlet mall, the historic river town of Occoquan next door, and a strong run of Mexican and Central American kitchens along US-1. Amtrak and VRE both stop here, so you can sleep cheap and still reach DC in about 35 minutes by train.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
You need a car for almost everything: hotels, the mall and the restaurants sit 3–8 km apart along I-95, US-1 and Prince William Parkway. Amtrak and VRE stop at Woodbridge station on Express Way, but the station is not walkable to much. OmniRide and PRTC buses link Potomac Mills with the Franconia-Springfield Metro and with downtown DC on weekdays.

Watch out
Safety
- I-95 and US-1 jam hard at weekday rush hour; build in 30–45 extra minutes.
- Woodbridge station is on a highway frontage road with no easy walk to hotels: arrange a pickup or drive.
- OmniRide DC commuter buses run weekdays only and mostly toward DC in the morning, back in the afternoon.
- Summer heat and humidity are real; the Neabsco boardwalk has little shade.
