Polatlı is a farming town 80 km west of Ankara, on the fast D200/E90 and the high-speed rail line, and it holds two things worth a detour: Gordion, the Phrygian capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2023, and the memorials to the 1921 Battle of the Sakarya, the fight that stopped the Greek advance on Ankara. The sights sit 10–20 km outside town and are spread across farmland, so a car or a hired driver decides how much you see. Most travellers pass through by train or bus; a day trip from Ankara covers the core.

Getting around

The town is compact and walkable, but Gordion, Duatepe, Sakarya village and the Mehmetçik monument are 10–20 km out along country roads with no useful bus service. A rental car from Ankara, or a taxi hired by the half-day, is the practical way to see them. Regional trains and the YHT stop in Polatlı, and Ankara buses run roughly hourly.

One ticket covers the museum, the Midas Mound tumulus and the citadel mound; go early, the site is open daily but hours shift.

Sakarya village and Halide Edip Adıvar Museum

The military cemetery and the house museum where Adıvar stayed after the battle; check the museum is open.

Duatepe Monument

Watch out

Safety

Polatlı is a quiet, safe farming town; the real risks are long unlit country roads at night, summer heat on the open plains, and unstaffed memorial sites with no phone signal. Drive with care and tell someone your route.
  • Museum opening hours are limited and change; the Alagöz headquarters museum in particular is often shut. Confirm before you set out.
  • Some battle memorials and the Hacıtuğrul mound are fenced or unstaffed; do not count on facilities, toilets or cafés at the sites.
  • Summer heat on the open plains is serious; carry water and go to Gordion early.
  • The high-speed station (Polatlı YHT) is 4 km from town with little around it; arrange your onward lift before you arrive.
