- Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
- Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
- Armenia ↗Armenia's land borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed to ordinary travellers, and several governments advise against or restrict travel near the Azerbaijan border (parts of Syunik, Vayots Dzor, Gegharkunik and Tavush). Read your own government's current advice before you book anything outside Yerevan and its day-trip ring.
- Armenia ↗Check entry rules for your passport on the official Armenian foreign ministry pages; many nationalities enter visa-free and others use the e-visa, but only apply on the government portal.
- Armenia ↗Cover shoulders and knees in churches and monasteries; men remove hats, and some women wear a scarf over the head.

Debed Canyon is not a fenced park: it is a 60 km river gorge between Vanadzor and the Georgian border, with no gate, no ticket and no opening hours. The two UNESCO monasteries, Haghpat and Sanahin, sit on opposite rims above Alaverdi; Kobayr hangs on the cliff opposite Tumanyan; Horomayr is built into the canyon wall below Odzun. The main Yerevan–Tbilisi highway runs along the floor, but most villages and all the monasteries are on the plain above, reached by switchback roads or on foot. Base in Alaverdi or Tumanyan for two nights, walk the short monastery trails, and treat the cliff routes as rough paths that need an offline map and dry weather.

Why go
- Monasteries sit on both rims and halfway down the cliffs, so every walk ends at a 10th–13th century building.
- The Kobayr and Horomayr trails are short but steep, with frescoes, khachkars and cave chambers on the cliff face.
- It is the natural stop between Yerevan and Tbilisi: the main highway runs along the canyon floor.
- Villages on the upper plain — Odzun, Haghpat, Sanahin, Dsegh — give homestays, honey, preserves and fruit oghi.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The canyon highway, Alaverdi, Tumanyan and the monastery car parks at Haghpat and Sanahin are reachable by car with short, mostly level walks.
- Kobayr, Horomayr and Bardzrakash are steep, rough and partly unmarked; not suitable for limited mobility or wheels.
- The Sanahin cable car cuts out the climb but still leaves a 20-minute uphill walk to the monastery.
Visiting lightly
- Buy honey, preserves and oghi from village houses rather than bringing supplies from Yerevan.
- Stay in Tumanyan, Odzun or Dsegh so the upper villages earn from visitors, not just Alaverdi.
- Do not drive onto meadow tracks after rain; ruts and erosion last for years.
- Take rubbish out of the canyon: village collection is limited.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Debed Canyon?
Nothing. There is no gate, no ticket and no entrance fee for the canyon, its trails or its viewpoints. Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries are also free. You pay only for transport, guides, museums such as the Mikoyan Brothers Museum (about 250–500 AMD, 2026 estimate) and food.
What are the best hikes in Debed Canyon?
The Kobayr monastery trail from Tumanyan (1.5–2 h return, moderate) and the Horomayr monastery trail below Odzun (2–3 h, hard, exposed) are the two classic short walks. Longer options are the Bardzrakash monastery hike above Dsegh (1.5–2 h, hike-in only) and the rim walk linking Haghpat and Sanahin. All are unmarked in places, so carry an offline map.
When is the best time to visit Debed Canyon?
May–June and September–October: dry paths, mild temperatures and long days. July and August are hot on the exposed rims and bring thunderstorms. December–February is cold with snow and ice on the cliff trails, and some guesthouses close.
Do I need a guide for the canyon?
No. Trails and monasteries are open and free. A guide is worth it for the cliff routes at Horomayr and Bardzrakash, where the path is faint and the exposure real, and for reading the Armenian and Georgian inscriptions at Kobayr and Akhtala.
How do I get to Debed Canyon without a car?
Marshrutkas run Yerevan–Vanadzor and Vanadzor–Alaverdi along the canyon highway, and smaller services link Tumanyan, Odzun and Dsegh to Alaverdi and Vanadzor. From Alaverdi, taxis cover the monasteries; the GG Taxi app reaches much of the canyon but cars can be scarce, so keep a local number as backup.
Can I camp in Debed Canyon?
Yes. Most land is unfenced and wild camping is widely accepted, including near Tsover lake. Ask at a village house before pitching near homes or fields, keep away from orchards and monastery grounds, and carry out all rubbish.
Is Debed Canyon worth a stop between Yerevan and Tbilisi?
Yes, if you give it at least one night. The highway runs along the canyon floor, so Alaverdi and Tumanyan are easy to break at, but the villages and monasteries sit on the rims above and need separate roads or walks. Two nights lets you do both rims without rushing.
