Fish Hoek sits halfway down the Cape Peninsula, between Muizenberg and Simon's Town, on the Southern Line railway. It is a residential beach town with one of the safest swimming beaches on this coast, a shark-spotting siren system, and a dry-town rule that keeps bottle stores out. Most travellers use it as a 2-night base for the peninsula, or a half-day beach stop between Kalk Bay and Boulders Beach. It is not a nightlife town and the town centre is small enough to walk in 15 minutes.

Getting around

The centre — beach, Main Road and station — is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end. Metrorail's Southern Line runs to Cape Town one way and Simon's Town the other, with the Muizenberg–Simon's Town stretch right beside the sea; fares are low and the trains are basic but kept clean. Golden Arrow buses run along the M4 and out to Kommetjie Road, leaving from the station. Uber is widely used here and is the easy option after dark. A car helps for Cape Point, Chapman's Peak and the winelands.

Watch out

Safety

Fish Hoek is one of the calmer, safer-feeling Cape Peninsula towns, and the beach is patrolled by lifeguards in season. The real risks are the sea (shark siren, rip currents, no handrails on the catwalk), petty theft after dark away from Main Road, and the train line at night — daylight trains and Uber after dark.
  • Swim between the flags: a shark-spotting siren system and an experimental net are in place, and the siren means get out.
  • The catwalk has sections with no handrails — risky for small children and unsteady walkers.
  • Fish Hoek is a dry town: no bottle stores, so buy wine elsewhere in the peninsula before you arrive.
  • Metrorail is cheap but has a reputation for delays and occasional incidents off-peak; many visitors take the train in daylight and Uber back.
  • Peers Cave is a short but loose climb up the dunes above 19th Avenue — go with someone and not at dusk.
