Regensburg
Give Regensburg one full day and one night: the medieval centre is compact, walkable in a day, and worth an overnight to see it after the day-trippers leave.

- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
- Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.
Regensburg is a UNESCO-listed medieval city on the Danube, 1 h 20 min by train from Munich and about 1 h from Nuremberg. Its old town survived WWII largely intact, so the draw is the streets themselves: the Gothic cathedral, the 12th-century Stone Bridge and the sausage kitchen by the river. Most travellers see it as a day trip; one night is better.

Getting around
The old town is a pedestrian zone and compact: all main sights sit within about 1 km, so walk. Buses (RVV/RVB) cover longer hops and run until around midnight; a 90-min zone-1 ticket is about €2.40 and an all-zone day pass about €5.00 (check). Bikes can be rented near the station.

Direct regional or ICE train from Regensburg Hbf
Easy as a base swap rather than a return day trip.
Nuremberg
goDoor to door: About 1 h
Direct train from Regensburg Hbf
Pairs well with Regensburg on a Bavaria rail loop.
Passau
cautionDoor to door: About 1.5 h
Direct train down the Danube
Doable as a day but better as an overnight on a Danube route.

Across the Stone Bridge; quieter, still a 10-min walk to the cathedral.
Around Hauptbahnhof
Cheapest beds and easiest with bags; 10–15 min walk to the old town.
