Byblos (Jbeil) is a small coastal city about 35 km north of Beirut, built on layers of Phoenician, Roman, Crusader and Ottoman remains and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old town, castle, souk and fishing harbour sit within a 15-minute walk of each other, so most of the visit is on foot. It works as a day trip from Beirut, but one night turns a rushed afternoon into a slow evening in the souk.

Getting around

The historic core is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Taxis and service taxis cover the rest of Jbeil and the highway; agree the fare before you get in. Buses and minibuses heading to Tripoli pass the Byblos highway exit, from where it is a short walk or taxi to the old town.

Byblos is a small, walkable town and the old core feels calm, but the national situation in Lebanon changes quickly: read your own government's travel advice first and keep cash and a charged phone on you.
