Stop for one night if you are travelling the Baikal-Amur Mainline; otherwise skip — the town is a rail stop, not a destination.
Novaya Chara is a small town on the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) in Zabaykalsky Krai, with a population of about 4,000. It serves as a base for expeditions into the Kodar Mountains and nearby gulag sites. The main sights — the railway station, a regional museum and the Chara sand dunes — can be seen in a few hours. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop between Severobaikalsk and Tynda.
