Fair Isle is a 5 km by 2.5 km island between Shetland and Orkney, home to about 65 people and one of Britain's remotest inhabited places. It is reached by a 12-passenger ferry from Grutness (2 h 40 min) or a small plane from Lerwick/Tingwall (25 min). There is no pub, no café and no shop beyond the post office; beds total a little over a dozen, so you book accommodation before you book transport. You come for seabird cliffs, knitwear and walking, and you stay at least two nights.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are weather, cliffs and isolation. Tell someone your route, carry a windproof layer, and treat ferry cancellations as normal, not exceptional.
  • Book accommodation before transport: ferry bookings are not accepted without a confirmed bed on the island.
  • The ferry takes only 12 foot passengers and is often cancelled for days in bad weather; build slack into both ends of the trip.
  • No vehicles can be brought across on the ferry.
  • No pub, café or off-licence: bring your own alcohol and check dietary needs with your host in advance.
  • Mobile data is limited to Vodafone and O2 4G; EE and Three have no signal.
